Queen Street Design Project

MCL (Molplant Construction Ltd) were the Main Contractor for the Queen Street Street Design Project which was the only Scottish contender for a National Urban Walking Award. Dumfries residents from Queen Street, McLellan Street, Brooke Street and Cumberland Street came together to form DG1 Neighbours in 2014, as part of the five-year project with Sustrans and Dumfries and Galloway Council.

While some parts of the design were controversial, the residents and Sustrans worked together to overcome the differences of opinion to produce a safe, pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood. The revamp of the Theatre Royal on the corner of Queen Street has given the entrance to the area a more vibrant feel.

New street furniture, lighting and signage have also helped to make make the area feel more welcoming.
